updating the master bedroom {the ORC edition}: week 5

Time is really flashing by,
this is already week 5 of the One Room Challenge: the bedroom edition!
Last week, after giving the ensuite bathroom a mini makeover,
I finally caught up on all the doors of all the closets,

(Nice right?, they still need one more coat of paint)
and this time, I tackled the inside closet:

some much better!

A few years ago, I transformed the inside of my closet
by adding extra shelves and a dresser.
It made it so much more pleasant to use:

The only thing I did then for Mon Cheri's closet was to add a top shelf
to store rarely used items.
But the rest remained the same.

(the middle bar was too low, the shirts touched the floor!)
This time I took everything out but that top shelf.

I thought about building my own storage system,
there are quite a few nice tutorial out there
(like this one by Ana White).
However I found this nice shelving system at Costco on sale for $100,
it was exactly what we needed.

The style is perfect for the room, with its dark wood tone.
It took some time to assemble it
but everything worked as planned.
The closet is a lot smaller than the system is planned for,
so we had to cut the metallic bar.

Now all of Mon Cheri's suits and shirts are hanging properly,
making getting ready in the morning easier.

Now I feel like the room is really coming together,
except for my former reading nook:

It was super cute, but the red chair is very red in the now blue room,
and it is so big it makes it difficult to access the closet.
So I shopped my house and found a great chair for that corner:

It is smaller and more in scale with the space.
But the fabric on the seat is quite dirty,
so I am going to reupholster it.
Luckily, the ORC was prolonged by a week, so I have still some time.

Here is my inspiration board:

Until next time,
happy DIYing!

updating the master bedroom {the ORC edition}: week 3

It is already half way point of the One Room Challenge,
and I feel I already made some good progress after painting the bedroom
a nice fresh coat of Palladium Blue,
just like in my inspiration board.

This week I started working on our 6 closet doors!
Yep 6!

I cannot complain about having closets,
but the doors themselves were quite plain.

Well this is no longer true!
(I still need to paint....)

The first thing I did was removing the old door handles,
they were the same than the actual door handles.

Modern, long handles from Home Depot.
I thought that was so easy, especially for the first 2 sets of closet doors,
but then:

Huge, giant holes!
The one on the right is a 1 1/8 inch hole,
and the one on the left is a mix of 4 1 1/8 inch holes!

So I cut some circles out of wood and patched up those holes,
and with a lot putty and sanding, it looks OK,
not perfect but the doors are 50 years old....

Finally I decided to play with some molding to dress them up.
I thought about doing some fancy cutting,
but I value my fingers (chop shaw!) and my sanity,
so I went simple:

The molding is glued and nailed in a few places,
then I put some putty to hide the holes and help the corners.

Now I still need to sand, prime and paint it all!

As a reminder here is my mood board:

Until next time,
happy DIYing!

Celebrating fall in the backyard

Over the past few weeks, it has been quite unseasonably cool,
so we have been able to enjoy the patio.

I decided to play with some accesories

into a little fall heaven, with rich orange colors:

nice, right?!

The table was built as a table/bench during the ORC patio edition.

It is the same sofa with the same pillows, just cover with a dropcloth.
And a few pillows from the inside, making it super comfy.

The plaid linen pillow was brought back from Uzes (my favorite town in Provence),
the horse one is from Pottery Barn.

I brought a few more indoor things outside:
a simple quilt ladder (made of 1 x2) with a few quilt,
being a quilter, there are always quilts everywhere!
And a few more pillows and blankets....

It is the perfect place to have drinks, snacks and good conversations.

Happy fall!

a year in review

It is time to bid farewell to 2016
and review this year top posts.

There were some great house projects:
the baking corner and the patio makeover are among my favorites,

There were a couple quilts:
calendar kids and puppies

And some smaller sewing projects:
sweet pepper coasters, lunch box, fox pillow and sewing mat.

and also some cross stitched embroideries:
advent calendar and beach bag.

I cannot finish this list without adding some desserts:
apple pie, lemon pie, galette des rois and tartelette aux fraises.

It was a very good year for this little blog, and I hope 2017 is just as good.
See you next year!

Summer is well on its way here in the DC suburbs, and since we are not going anywhere, it is nice to eat/drink on the patio. Bu...
