building garden structures

At the end of summer 2008, I build this

I originally built it as a big pot....
my dogs run through everything and pee on everything,
killing plants right and left!
So this was a great way to protect them!
And as you can see, this also a great way to improve the view!

I used this book:
trellises and arbors by Sunset (over 35 projects...)
I followed more or less the directions for:
"raised-bed trellis".
I modified the back as it was too complicated.

It is made of pressure treated wood, mostly 2 x 6, except for the cap
that is made of 2 x 8 for the front, and 2 x 4 for the rest.
So that you can sit on it.
I used only one sheet of heavy-duty (3/4 " thick) treated lattice,
and attached it horizontally to the 4 x 4 posts.
They are 2 feet in the ground, so pretty sturdy!

The overall size is:
7.5 feet x 4.5 feet x 6.5 feet tall

In 2009, all the plants came back after their 1st winter.
All survived, and grew bigger!

We added some climbing annuals from seeds,
and they took over the lattice.

We enjoyed it so much that I built another one,
for the other side of our patio,
a smaller one, without a lattice screen:
it is 7.5 feet x 3.5 feet

One half is lavender, the other roses and lilac.
During the summer, everything grew very nicely

We had a "green wall" between our neighbors!

the smaller also grew but much slower.

But this year, it is doing great,
it is only May!

The lavender is finally happy,
I am excited to have my first harvest!

Yep I will miss our backyard.

  1. Wow Morgane, thanks for sharing this with me. You did a great job and this year those plants really took off and look great. It looks like there's even enough room to sit on the edge if you were tight on seating. Funny that you still haven't used your pocket hole jig but you will.

  2. Hi Morgane-
You stated in one of your captions that now you have a greeen wall between you and your neighbor. I think you should of said you have a GREEN THUMB!!! Your flowers are so lush and big. They look so pretty. I haven't had the chance to plant anything in my backyard yet. I am hoping to go out and get some flowers over the weekend.
I also enjoyed what you said in our profile - that you enjoy fabric and paper a lot. I can relate.

I hope you have a wonderful holiday weekend with your family.
    My best - Diane

  5. Those are some seriously cool projects! I love that you built that! You've really inspired me to want to create something beautiful like that in my yard. I don't know if I could keep the plants alive in it though:) I haven't figured that one out yet...LOL. Thanks so much for linking to Poppies at Play! have a wonderful summer!
    XOXO,

  7. thank you for all of your nice comments!
We have been enjoying these boxes, sitting on them often, and playing too. Apparently ponies and legos get lost in the "jungle"!
When I build then I made sure they were big enough to let the plants inside survive the heat of summer and the freezing winter.
Our soil is poor, so usual plants do not do well. Here I bought some nice "dirt" and planted some easy plants, and they seem happy and growing well. I must admit it is my first gardening success!
